studying the word of god

Lesson 4

How a Believer must study the Word - continued

V     Psalms 1:2-3  But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

V     1 Thessalonians 2:4  But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.

Rightly Dividing

V     2 Timothy 2:14-18  Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;  Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

In these scriptures we can see clearly the admonishment, do not strive over the Word of the Lord. Instead of profiting the hearers it will subvert them. The word subvert comes from the greek word catastrophe which means to overthrow, the opposite of edify. Read 1Timothy 6:1-6.

When our wills have not been completely given over to the Lord, our ability to rightly divide the Word of Truth is compromised. Interpretation of the scripture influenced by the desires of the flesh, hypocrisy can only lead to false doctrine and destruction. Remember 2 Corinthians 10:5 “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, (this is the Word of God) and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Through this pattern of thought we can “rightly divide the Word of Truth”.

V     Isaiah 55:6-13 What a glorious knowledge these sweet words, “So shall my Word be”
